Abstract
Purpose:To evaluate the safety and efficacy of two surgical techniques:direct chop and stop&chop in phacoemulsificaion of hard cataracts
Method:In this RCT,96 eyes of 96 patients were randomized into 2 groups of 48 each and both underwent phaco surgery with either direct-chop or stop&chop technique.Intra op effective phaco time, phaco power and irrigation fluid used were noted.Anterior segment and Va were assessed at postop Day 1,1week and 4 weeks.Refraction done at 4 weeks
Result:There was no statistical significance in the effective phaco time, phaco power or irrigation fluid used between the 2 groups. The postop Va showed a better result in stop&chop group at 1 week. However at 4 weeks, both were found equally efficient with 97.92% having vision between 6/12-6/6
Conclusion:With phacoemulsification of hard cataracts, stop&chop and direct chop required similar phaco parameters and both were found equally efficient and majority of patients achieved good visual results at the end of 4 weeks
