Abstract
Amniotic membrane was first used as a biomaterial for conjunctival replacement following symblepharon release. The durability, pliability, versatility & cost effectiveness of freshly prepared amniotic membrane makes it a useful adjunctive treatment in various ophthalmic procedures. A 50y/M presented with inability to open both eyes for 20 days, along with redness, watering and sticking of lids with profuse discharge. On ocular examination, matted eyelashes, edematous eyelids, conjunctival congestion along with adhesion of both lids in medial & lateral fornices was seen. The palpebral aperture was reduced to 3mm vertically & 22 mm horizontally in both eyes. Conjunctival Swab detected presence of S. aureus. Adhesion lysis was done under LA with excision of subconjunctival fibrous tissue along with ocular reconstruction by freshly prepared Amniotic membrane graft to cover the bare sclera & denuded palpebral conjunctiva up to the edge of the recessed symblepharon with satisfactory result.
