Abstract

Background: Cataract surgery leads to many complications one of which is posterior capsular opacification. PCO develops from remnants of lens epithelial cells.The development of PCO depends on many factors such as effective hydrodissection, cortical removal, PCIOL biomaterial and duration of implant in the eye.

Objective:To compare and study PCO in hydrophilic and hydrophobic IOL implantation after irrigation of capsular bag with Trypan blue in developmental cataract.

Method: PCO presence was recorded at 1st day, 2 weeks & 6 weeks for 20 patients undergoing cataract extraction with hydrophilic lens implantation and 20 patients undergoing cataract extraction with hydrophobic lens implantation.

Result: PCO is lower in Hydrophobic lens group than hydrophilic lens group.

Conclusion: Trypan blue dye & hydrophobic IOL are found to have low propensity to induce lens epithelial cell proliferation. Thus they prove to give better visual prognosis in patients of developmental cataract.
