OBJECTIVE: To study prevalence and determinants of compliance of spectacle wear among adolescents in a tertiary care hospital MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross sectional study was conducted over 2 years. 600 adolescents(10-19 years) attending ophthalmology OPD were interviewed and possible causes associated with non-compliance identified. RESULTS: Out of 600, 342(57%) were males and 258(43%) females. Overall compliance rate was 44%. Compliance was more with male gender(23%), parents education(19%), myopes(17%) and higher degree of ametropia(21%). The common causes for not wearing spectacles were broken spectacles (16%), lost spectacles(9%), forgot at home(17%), use of spectacles sometimes(14%), teased about spectacles(21%), parental disapproval(8%) and do not like spectacles(13%).
