Abstract
SETTING & METHODS-Tertiary referral hospital, prospective study of 6 months from july to December-2018.100 patients undergoing uneventful phacoemulsification by the same surgeon were allotted randomly in 2 groups with one group having amikacin and the other having no amikacin in BSS. Pre-opertaive and post-operative specular counts & macular Ocular Coherence Tomography(OCT) were measured and analyzed.
RESULT-We had minimal and negligent change in the macular OCT and specular counts among the two groups with nil incidence of nocardia endophthalmitis which was high as 50% till we introduced it in BSS
CONCLUSIONS-We suggest the usage of amikacin antibiotic in the BSS in places where mass community cataract surgeries and in places where nocardia endophthalmitis is prevalant.
