Abstract
Purpose of Study: To study the demography, etiology, characteristics, smear and culture positivity of corneal ulcer. Material and Methods: Retrospective analysis of patients with corneal ulcer who presented in a tertiary hospital from June 2019 to April 2020 was done. Demographic characteristics, etiology, culture positivity, type of corneal ulcer, treatment failures if any were reviewed. Results: 66 cases of corneal ulcer presented in the study duration out of which 51 (77%) were male and 15(23%) were female. 29(44%) fungal, 24 (36.3%) viral, and 3 were bacterial in etiology.. 58% were from rural background of which 19 (29%) were either labourers or farmers. 17(25%) patients presented without any treatment from other hospitals. 47(71%) ulcers were central in location. KOH smear showed fungal elements in 11 cases and only 4 cases were culture positive. Conclusion: Corneal ulcer is more common in rural or semi urban population who works in fields and needs early treatment.
