Abstract
The aim of the study was to look for an association between Body mass index (BMI) and diabetic retinopathy (DR) in Mumbai slum population. DR screening was done using seven field fundus images. DR was classified into mild, moderate, severe Non Proliferative DR and Proliferative DR as per ICDR classification. Presence of diabetic macular edema was noted. A total of 1163 cases of diabetes above 40 years were included in the study. Of these 258 had DR and 107 had sight threatening DR. The association between BMI and DR as well as abdominal circumference and DR was found to be statistically significant. The mean BMI in cases without DR was 26.5+/- 5.7 and cases with DR was 25.5+/-5.2. Significant association was also seen between abdominal circumference and diabetic retinopathy. Thus higher body mass index might be the protective factors against risk of manifesting DR.
