Abstract
Conjunctival Stromal Tumor (COST) is a newly described, unclassified entity that encompasses benign mesenchymal proliferation of conjunctival stroma similar to the already known entity GIST (Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor). Inflammatory or reactive stimulus has been proposed for the pathogenesis. Misdiagnosis is common given the rarity and lack of knowledge. The most important differential is myxoma that can be life-threatening due to the association with cardiac myxoma. Characteristic histopathological features and additional immunohistochemical findings confirm the diagnosis and differentiate it from other mesenchymal tumors. Diagnostic immunohistochemical findings are positivity for CD34, Vimentin, and CD68. We describe the presentation, clinical features, management, and treatment outcome of two patients who presented with this rare conjunctival lesion.
