Abstract

Aim

To study the effect of botulinum toxin in acute isolated sixth nerve palsy.

Materials and methods

It is a prospective study done over a period of 12 months. Routine evaluation was done. Imaging was done to rule out any other cause for nerve palsy. 5 units was given in the medial rectus under topical anaesthesia as an Out patient procedure. The patients were assessed 2 weeks and 1 month later.

Results

We had three patients. All the three patients had complete recovery of nerve palsy by the end of 1 month. No significant complications were noted.

Conclusion

Diplopia due to Isolated sixth cranial nerve palsy can practically affect patients. Spontaneous resolution and conservative management can have their own disadvantages. Botulinum toxin can be the primary treatment in such patients
