Abstract

External ophthalmomyiasis is the infestation of the superficial external ocular structures by fly larvae mostly by Oestrus ovis.Presenting a case of ophthalmomyiasis in a 34 year old male with 4 day history of periocular foreign body sensation,pain and bloody discharge from his right eye following a history of fall on face 7 days back.On examination,a necrosed,gaping wound of 7X2cm was present under the eye which was infested with larvae,eyelids were swollen,conjunctival congestion and discharge were present.The larvae were removed under local anaesthesia (4% xylocaine) using Turpentine oil,wound was debrided and treated with Oxum spray regularly for 1 week.Systemic antibiotic and ocular antibiotic-steroid combination was given.After 1 week of treatment BCVA in both his eyes was 6/6,anterior and posterior segment findings were normal also CT-scan was normal.The wound healed with secondary intention.Lid and adnexal anatomy post healing was almost maintained.
