Abstract
Purpose:To study the morphology of visually significant congenital and developmental cataract. Methods: In this retrospective study of 30 children operated for congenital and developmental cataract, a chart review was done to find out the common morphological type. Results:Partial cataract was found to be five times more common than total cataract. Zonular cataract was seen in 23(76.6%) cases, including the one with riders followed by total cataract in 5(16.6%) cases. The least common seen were posterior polar (3.33%) and posterior subcapsular with blue dot (3.33%). Conclusion:The mere presence of cataract does not indicate surgical removal. The morphology of the cataract – type and size – can be indicative of its visual significance. In our study maximum patients had partial cataract of zonular variety. As young children especially infants cannot be assessed for visual acuity, it is important to assess morphology of the cataract to decide about the necessity of surgical intervention.
