Abstract
To study progression of myopia in relation to lifestyle, body growth & axial length (AL) of eye in children
MATERIAL & METHOD
1500, school going children of age 7-15yrs, studied & followed for 3yrs. Body weight, height & physique noted. Children & guardians were made to fill a detailed questionnaire regarding reading & eating habits, outdoor games, diet & nutrition, duration of near work & use of audiovisual (AV) devices.
Visual acuity, cycloplegic refraction, PMT, corneal curvature, AL of eye, IOP & fundus examined.
RESULTS
950/1500 were myopic from beginning. At one year 78% revealed progression of – 0.5 to -1.5 D, 0.25mm increase in AL, 0. 5-3cm in height & 3.5-5.5 kg weight. Progression was more in children having sedentary life, indulging more in AV devices, devoid of healthy diet & visual hygiene
CONCLUSION
Genetic factors responsible for body growth along with unhealthy reading habits in low illumination, use of AV devises, lack of balance diet, add to increase in myopia.
