Abstract
Aim:To compare hyphal morphology seen through simple microscope and an innovative device, IOLSCOPE
Methods:IOL scope is low-cost smartphone assisted microscopy device with optics made with 4 PMMA +30D IOLS. It requires only a prepared slide of fungus be placed, on a torchlight for viewing, without need for conventional microscope. Prospective comparative study was conducted over a 3 month period on 194 samples, comparing images obtained from IOLSCOPE and Carl Zeiss microscope(gold standard).
Results:Both devices were used to capture images of 400X and 1000X magnifications. Sensitivity and specificity of identifying fungal hyphae was 100% with both, however the resolution of IOLSCOPE was lower and hence species identification was difficult.
Conclusion:IOLSCOPE is a good alternative to conventional microscope, as it provides good quality images for diagnostic purposes. It has wide applications for use in peripheral centers, fields and camps and for teleconsultation during COVID times.
