Abstract

AIM: To determine lissamine green stained Marx line (ML) as an indicator of Meibomian gland function.

DESIGN: Prospective Observational case series.

METHOD: In 160 Subjects with age ≥20 years with eye discomfort (Standard eye comfort questionnaire), ML score was calculated for outer, middle and inner thirds of the lower eyelid margin. ML scoring was graded as follows: 0, entirely on the conjunctival side of meibomian orifices (MOs); 1, part of the ML touches MOs; 2, ML runs through all of MOs; and 3, ML runs on the eyelid-margin side of MOs. A correlation between severity of Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD), symptoms and meibomian gland secretion score (MGSS), and ML score was assessed.

RESULTS: There is a strong correlation between severity of MGD, MGSS and ML score. Subjects with higher ML scores had severe MGD and more ocular symptoms.

CONCLUSION: A strong correlation between the ML score and MGD indicates that ML score is a good clinical indicator for Meibomian Gland function.
