Abstract
Purpose:To understand the ophthalmic clinical features and outcomes of facial nerve palsy patients who were referred to our outpatient department of ophthalmology for various conditions. Methods:An observational study was conducted in 50 facial nerve palsy patients between June’2019-June’2020.The clinical signs, management and prognosis were analysed.Results:out of 50 facial nerve palsy patients, 26 cases were of Bell’s palsy,13 cases of trauma and 11 cases following CVA.The clinical signs were lagophthalmos, ptosis,corneal epithelial defect,conjunctival infection,epiphora,dry eye.Conservative treatments like ophthalmic ointment or eye taping were conducted along with invasive procedure like tarsorrhaphy. Signs had improved in 90% of patients with corneal epithelial defect,60% with lagophthalmos. Conclusion:The ophthalmic clinical features of facial nerve palsy were mainly corneal lesion and eyelid malposition which improved with conservative and invasive management.
