Abstract
Aim:To assess the awareness amongst pediatricians and ophthalmologists about Retinopathy of prematurity(ROP).Methods:Questionnaire based cross sectional study, which was filled on paper or google forms circulated via email and WhatsApp. Results:152 pediatricians and 157 ophthalmologists participated in the study. Most of them were aware about the risk factors of ROP[prematurity(95%,p<0.01), low birth weight (84%,p<0.01) ], age & weight criteria for screening (p<0.01),Composition of dilating drops(78%,p<0.01) and treatment modalities[laser(91%,p,<0.010),Anti VEGF(80%,p<0.01),surgery(55%,p=0.04)]. 93% have an established referral facility. Only 53% know that babies need screening at 4 weeks. While 77% stated that screening carried no risk, 41% believed that treatment had associated risk. Conclusion: While the awareness amongst doctors about ROP is good, further coordination between screening and referral centers can help reduce the gap between need and service.
