Abstract
Optic neuritis is one of the most common condition presenting acutely to the neuro-ophthalmologist worldwide. In the past two decades the understanding of disease has undergone a major drift from association with Multiple Sclerosis to linkages with newer entities like neuromyelitis optica (NMO) spectrum and myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein(MOG). There is a need to recognize these additional phenotypic and serological distinct categories and classify them as NMO, MOG, post infectious or chronic relapsing inflammatory optic neuropathy (CRION) as each of them behaves differently and timely intervention can help salvage vision. In this course we would be giving a brief description on the varied clinico-radiological presentations and then discussing how an ophthalmologist should approach a patient presenting with his/her first attack of optic neuritis(case based) and the decisions regarding management to prevent irreversible visual loss from optic neuritis and any further attacks.
