Abstract
AIM-To study the prevalence & risk factors of dry eye disease (DED) in patients with Osteoporosis.
METHODS-This cohort study was conducted between Sept 2019 to Feb 2020 in a tertiary eye care hospital.205 diagnosed cases of osteoporosis (Age>50yrs,DEXA-scan T-Score<-2.5,Without autoimmune diseases) were included. DED evaluation was based on Ocular Surface Disease Index(OSDI), Tear film break-up time(TBUT), Fluorescein corneal staining(FL/S) and schirmer test. DED was defined if an OSDI score≥ 13 along with one sign in the worse eye:TBUT≤10 s, Schirmer≤5mm, FL/S≥ grade 1. RESULTS-Out of 205 patients (male=47, female=158),mean age 63.23±9.4yrs. 14.8% (n=3,M=8,F=23) were found to have definite DED. Significant odds of having DED were associated with older age(>50)& female, & not with smoking, diabetes mellitus or hypertension.
CONCLUSION-Osteoporosis is a risk factor for developing DED & they should be referred to physicians early to prevent future complication.
