Abstract

Aim:To describe the clinico-entomological features and outcome of eyelid carcinoma cases complicated by orbital myiasis.METHODS:16 cases of eyelid carcinoma were evaluated.Turpentine oil & chloroform was used to mechanically remove the maggots.Scanning electron microscopicy of larvae was done.RESULTS:Predominant tumor was Basal Cell Carcinoma (50.0%) followed by Sebaceous gland Carcinoma (18.75%),squamous cell carcinoma (18.75%) and Lacrimal sac malignancy(12.50%). In one case myiasis lead to intracranial extension .In 7 patients > 100 larvae were removed. Common species identified after surface Scanning Electron Microscopic study were Dermatobia hominis,Wohlfahrtia magnifica and hypoderma bovis.Complications and treatment outcome were discussed.

Conclusion:Orbital myiasis is a rare and challenging disorder.It can aggravate the malignant condition.Mechanical removal after suffocating the maggots is important step.SEM study is important tool for entomological identification.
