Abstract
AIM: To find out outcome of canalicular reconstruction surgery using 20G IV catheter as stent
METHODOLOGY: 12 cases of canalicular laceration were included in study. Other end of canaliculus was identified by injecting viscoelastic substance (HPMC) stained with fluorescein through other punctum and watching it come out through other end. 20G IV catheter was inserted through punctum of lacerated canaliculus and passed through its other cut end thus identified. Normal saline was injected through catheter and checked if it went down nasolacrimal duct to ensure catheter was in right place. Lid laceration was repaired. Catheter was removed after 3 months.
RESULT: Catheter was patent in 10 cases, fibrosed in 2. Canaliculus was completely formed in the 10 cases with proper functioning of drainage system
CONCLUSION: 20G IV Catheter was thus demonstrated to be cheaper and readily available alternative to Mini Monoka stent and pig tail catheter for canalicular reconstruction in this study.
