Abstract
Purpose: To analyze eyes with endogenous endophthalmitis lost to phthisis bulbi. Methods: Retrospective recruitment of all eyes with diagnosis of endogenous endophthalmitis in which final outcome was phthisis during the study period of 6 years was done. Results: Out of 176 eyes with endogenous endophthalmitis phthisis was the final outcome in 11 eyes. Average age of presentation was 34.45 ± 23.09 years. Risk factors noted were preceding systemic illness (n=8; 72.77%), post-immunization febrile illness (n=1), post-laparotomy (n=1). Vitreous culture was positive in 6 cases (E. coli n=2; S. aureus n=2; Klebsiella n=1; S. pneumoniae n= 1). On the culture of anterior chamber exudates, fungal isolates were noted in 2 different cases. Conclusion: This study highlights the clinical and microbiological profiles of patients developing phthisis secondary to endogenous endophthalmitis. Preceding systemic illness, positive vitreous culture, virulent organisms were risk factors.
