Abstract
Imparting surgical training for Vitreo-retinal (VR) surgeries is a big challenge. Observing competent surgeons followed by a direct attempt on the patients, wet lab practice and simulators are the current approaches for training budding surgeons. These have their respective concerns like patient safety; disposal of cadaveric eyes; high cost and availability of simulators.
Recognizing the limitations of these approaches, we designed an eye model “ RETISURGE ” using the concept of 3-D Printing, which would help the beginners for practising the basic steps of VR Surgeries. The major advantage of our model is that it has been designed by using indigenous materials that are readily available in our hospital, making it inexpensive. Secondly, it can be used inside the operating room without the need for separate instrumentation.
Thus, RETISURGE is a simple, cost-effective and practical model for orientation of trainees to basic VR surgical skills and difficult steps like endolaser.
