Abstract
Purpose: To describe a surgical approach for removal of subretinal cysticercosis through pars plana vitrectomy.
Methods: A 25G Pars plana vitrectomy was performed using the CONSTELLATION vision system (ALCON). After performing core vitrectomy an attempt to induce PVD was made.Thick hyaloid sheets were removed carefully around the cyst and thin sheets of vitreous were removed using 25G ILM forceps. A localised diathermy was made using endocautery in the retina over the cyst. Then using the active vacuum with help of green tip, the cyst was slowly extruded out from the subretinal space through the retinotomy and eaten up using a vitrectomy cutter. At last fluid air exchange followed by endolaser was done.Silicone oil tamponade was given.
Outcome: Post operatively the retina was attached. Media was clear with no evidence of inflammation in the eye
Conclusion: PPV is an effective and safe technique to manage intraocular cysticercosis.
