Abstract

Membrane dissection is the one of the most difficult yet an important step in the diabetic vitrectomy. This video demonstrates different techniques used in membrane dissection aided by animated images to help with easier understanding. We attempt to comprehensively explain various techniques used under following headings

1. Vitrectomy

2. Segmentation- A) using vertical cutting scissors B) vitrectomy probe

3. Delamination- A) removal of fibrovascular tissue from the retina using horizontally cutting scissors B) vitrectomy probe

4. Diathermy

5. Importance of finding the plane of dissection and use of pick to find the plane of dissection

7. Bimanual surgery- A) lighted pick B) chandelier illumination

8. Use of PFCL in membrane dissection- as a third hand

9. Possible complications during vitrectomy

Also highlights the multifunctionality of smaller probes which can be used to dissect tissue like scissors, lift and peel tissue like forceps and shave tissue safely without damaging retina.
