Abstract
To describe the surgical methods to alleviate lagophthalmos in patients with Facial palsy.
Synopsis:
Lagophthalmos is a major ophthalmic sequelae in patients with facial palsy which results in functional as well as cosmetic impairment. Facial palsy can be secondary to neurological or traumatic reasons and most of them are managed conservatively which can be quite cumbersome to the patients. In this video, we highlight the temporary and permanent measures to correct the lagophthalmos in patients with facial palsy and demonstrate the insertion of a gold weight implant in the epi tarsal plane along with lower lid recession to correct lagophthalmos. Other reanimation procedures of the upper lid and the materials used to correct the lagophthalmos, are also discussed. Such permanent surgical correction methods not only improves the lagophthalmos but also the quality of life in these patients.
