Abstract
METHOD: Prospective study of 32 diabetic patients (50 eyes), who underwent uneventful Cataract (MSICS ) surgery by a single surgeon and developed CME within 6 months . Clinical history, BCVA, Slit lamp, funduscopy, FFA, macular OCT done before surgery and on each follow up upto 6 month.
RESULTS:. Demographic characteristics, such as age and gender had no correlation. Eyes which developed CME had systemic risk factors like – diabetes > 10 y (64%), HbA1c >8 in 66%, IDDM in 52%, PDR in 72%, poor glycemic control in 46%, diabetic nephropathy in 84%, hypertension in 62%.These were well correlated with worse BCVA and increased foveal thickness after cataract surgery.
CONCLUSION: Systemic risk factors like duration, HbA1c, severity, type of diabetes, nephropathy should be addressed prior to and after surgery for better and sustained visual outcome
