Abstract
People with learning difficulties, especially the differently abled ones, are care-dependent. In addition, they have difficulty expressing their problems. Handling such children requires time, sensitivity and patience. Here we have a 10-year old, differently abled male child, who presented with right eye congenital cataract. He underwent cataract surgery with IOL implantation with all the safety precautions. On first postoperative day, he had clinical features suggestive of postoperative endophthalmitis which grew H.influenzae and was treated with intravitreal antibiotics. But, on subsequent follow up, the eye became pre phthisical. Special attention should be given to these differently abled children, in terms of hygiene along with extra care by the attenders, pre, at the time surgery and in the post-operative period. Post-operative systemic antibiotics should also be strongly recommended, to reduce the incidence of endophthalmitis in this type of children.
