Abstract

Objective-To assess efficacy of Sodium Chloride(NaCl) 5% eye drop in comparison to 6% eye Ointment & study tear osmolarity as an objective measure correlating with clinical findings in corneal edema

Method- Randomized, crossover study. Subjects(40 eyes) were divided into 2 groups: Group A received NaCl 5% drop while Group B received 6% ointment for 7 days. Subsequently, after a 1-week wash-out period, switch over of treatment was done

Result-Median reduction in CCT from baseline at 6 Hours with 5% drop was 23μm(-27, 74) and that with 6% ointment was 37.5μm(-7, 85). Thus, it was more with 6% ointment(p=0.013). The difference in reduction in CCT between two drugs at 1 week was not statistically significant, although there was significant reduction in thickness with each drug individually. The change in tear osmolarity from baseline till 6 Hours with both drugs was significant

Conclusion-Sodium chloride 6% ointment in a QID dosing is more effective in medical management of corneal edema
