Abstract

To report a case of megaloblastic anemia presenting as anemic retinopathy.

METHOD: A 21 years old female presented to retina OPD with complaints of sudden painless diminution of vision in BE for 15 days. History of anorexia and loss of appetite 15 days back following which she was diagnosed as megaloblastic anemia.BCVA in right eye 6/12NIF, left eye 6/24 NIF, Conjunctival pallor noted. Fundus in Right eye showed superficial retinal hemorrhage, Roth spots, intraretinal hemorrhage, sub hyaloid hemorrhage. Fundus Left eye showed subretinal hemorrhage and preretinal hemorrhage, Roth spots. Blood picture shows Hb%- 4.5gm%, RBC-1.2million/cu.mm, WBC- 9,300cells/cu mm, platelets-56000cells/cu mm vitamin B12-32pg/ml. Vit B12 injections and 4 units of packed cell transfusion was done. Post transfusion re-examination of fundus was done.

CONCLUSION: This is a case of megaloblastic anemia presenting as anemic retinopathy ,which is a reversible condition with correction of megaloblastic anemia
