Abstract

Diabetes mellitus affects millions globally.Diabetic retinopathy is a major complication of diabetes.The present study was conducted to find out whether cataract surgery leads to progression of diabetic retinopathy in patients with and without pre-existing diabetic retinopathy.This study was done to evaluate visual outcome and retinal changes in 115 patients postoperatively.Among them 95 patients (86.36%) had no diabetic retinopathy, 9(8.18%)had mild NPDR , 5 (4.5%) had moderate NPDR and 1(0.09%)had PDR preoperatively.All patients were followed up after cataract surgery on postoperative day 1, 2nd week,1st month,3rd month and 6th month. Post operatively 2 (1.9%)study subjects among 95 with no pre-existing retinopathy group showed retinal changes.There is no significant progression of diabetic retinopathy after cataract surgery.Meticulous follow up is needed for early detection and treatment of the retinopathy in order to preserve visual improvement gained from cataract surgery.
