Abstract
Aim: Estimate prevalence of dry eye disease(DED) symptoms in an urban population. Method: Cross-section population-based study. 2-stage cluster sampling procedure. All subjects 20 years or more in 50 municipal wards in an Indian city were included. A previously validated 6-item DED questionnaire used. The presence of 1 or more symptoms often or all the time was positive. Results: 2378 people completed the survey. Male were 1397(58.7%) females were 981(41.3%). Age-adjusted prevalence for any positive symptom was 6.8%(95% CI: 5.8-7.8%). Symptoms: red-eye(2.8%), burning sensation(1.8%), grittiness(1.7%), dry eye(1.2%), gummy eye(1.2%), and eyelash crusts(0.8%). Risk factors by multivariate regression: female sex, digital display use, smoking, and air-conditioning. Conclusion: Prevalence of DED symptoms in urban India was estimated in this study which are suggestive of either a lesser prevalence of DED in India than current estimates, or the distribution of disease is non-uniform
