Abstract
Cataract in early age maybe associated with persistent fetal vasculature which needs to be excluded to avoid complications during surgery. The presence of cataract with a persistent pupillary membrane in this case, lead to further investigations to rule out persistent fetal vasculature which if undetected could lead to disastrous complications during surgery. An 18-year old female presented with unilateral cataract and on investigating was found to have persistent fetal vasculature which prompted to take adequate precautions in case of possible cataract surgery. USG doppler was suggestive of a thick echogenic band extending from lens up to optic nerve head. Based on USG it was diagnosed to be a case of Persistent Fetal Vasculature with Sensory Exotropia with complicated microphthalmos. USG Doppler is a very handy and affordable investigation and can be useful in diagnosing Persistent Fetal Vasculature and ruling out other diseases that mimic this clinically.
