Abstract

Aim: To evaluate clinical profile, ocular parameters and outcomes of developmental cataract in children.

Methods: Hospital records of children diagnosed with developmental cataract between 1-16 years, undergoing phacoaspiration (PA) with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation, with a minimum follow up of 6 months were reviewed.

Results: We recruited 115 children (207 eyes) out of which bilateral were 92 (80%). The most common complaint was decreased vision (69%) and the most common cataract seen was zonular cataract (51.7%). Strabismus was present in 32 eyes (15.5%) at presentation. Axial length varied from 19.1 mm to 30.8 mm (mean 22.3±1.73 mm). 78% had visual acuity ≥20/40 at the last follow up (range, 6 months- 4 years). 19 eyes (9.2%) required secondary intervention and 3 eyes had significant myopic shift.

Conclusion: PA with IOL implantation in children where the onset of cataract is more than one year of age, achieves favorable visual outcomes with minimal rates of complications.
