Abstract
INTRODUCTION: Plus disease in ROP refers to dilatation and tortuosity of posterior pole vessels. It is an indication of poor prognosis and warrants treatment.
AIM: To assess the efficacy of ROP screening by residents on the basis of posterior fundus vascular changes.
METHODS: Prospective study in a Tertiary care hospital.12 residents evaluated fundus of 108 eyes of babies using indirect ophthalmoscopy and were asked to classify the posterior pole vessels as normal or abnormal. The findings were then confirmed by a specialist. The data was analysed using SPSS software.
RESULTS: Findings were- Sensitivity: 91.48%, Specificity: 91.80%, PPV: 89.58, NPV: 93.33%. The residents could identify abnormalities in all treatable cases of ROP without fail.
CONCLUSION: With proper training and efficient screening protocols, Ophthalmic residents can help in early diagnosis of treatable cases of ROP to provide timely intervention in such cases which can lead to drastic decrease in disease burden.
