Abstract

There are may pharmaceutical companies in the market with neutraceuticals for the treatment of Age relate macular degeneration. We did a survey of neutraceuticals which were promoted by the medical representative visiting the clinic. We compared their contents to the AREDS 1 & 2 formula. A total of 25 neutraceuticals were compared. We found the only 3 brands had all the contents according to AREDS in the exact concnentration. 9 brands had all the contents of the AREDS formula but with insufficient concentration. None of the brands could provide the AREDS formula with once a day dosage. It is important that as physicians we are aware of the concentration and constituents of drugs we prescribe. Neutraceuticals do not come under guidelines of drug controllers hence we should make scientific decisions while prescribing medications.
