Abstract
BACKGROUND:ROP is a vaso-proliferative retinal disease that affects low birth weight and preterm babies.
AIM:To determine the incidence and risk factors (RF) of ROP in a tertiary care neonatal unit.
METHODS:Retrospective chart review between June 2008 and December 2019. Infants were of birth weight<1500g and/or preterm babies of gestation <32 weeks.Multivariate regression analyses done. RESULTS:1486 babies were screened during this period.198 (13.4%) had ROP. Stage 1, 79(5.3%), Stage 2 105(7.1%), stage 3,13(0.9%).1 child had stage 4(0.1 %)in one eye and required scleral buckle.7 eyes required laser and 5 Inj Avastin. Others with stage 3 ROP regressed.RF for ROP were depressed at birth, anaemia, thrombocytopenia and hyponatremia(p<0.001). DISCUSSION:The incidence of ROP in our study was 13%, whereas incidence reported in earlier studies in India ranged from 24-47%. CONCLUSION: Only 0.005% of children from our centre required treatment. Good neonatal care can reduce ROP in our country.
