Abstract
Topical anesthesia is widely practiced for phacoemulsification surgery for cataracts. topical anesthesia closely approaches to ideal anesthesia technique when compared to other modalities.
in spite of being a favorable technique in terms of safety, convenience, patient-friendly and recovery, topical anesthesia is not practiced by all ophthalmologists and its use is limited to phacoemulsification. The instruction course aims to widen the horizon of indications of topical anesthesia by introducing its application to other common ocular surgeries like MSICS (Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery), Trabeculectomy, Pars Plana Vitrectomy and Strabismus surgery.
The issues discussed will be patient selection, preparations, surgical adaptations required to switch to topical anesthesia, precautions and practical tips for each of the mentioned ocular procedures.
