Abstract
This case series of six patients aim at describing the role of Nd:YAG laser as the first line treatment of refractory fibrin membrane following uncomplicated small incision cataract surgery. Post operatively all patients had dense fibrin membrane occluding the pupillary area, with clear vitreous cavity. They were treated with topical steroids, anti glaucoma medication and atropine, but FM was refractory. They were hence subjected to Nd:YAG laser membranectomy using low energy range of 1.6-2.2mW, applied to the edge of FM.The number of shots ranged from 30-60 and topical medications were continued post procedure. Visual acuity significantly improved and FM completely got absorbed in a few days in all the cases with no instance of bleeding or recurrence. FM is speculated to be caused by immunologic reaction and there is no general consensus on treatment owing to its infrequent occurence. In this case series,Nd: YAG laser membranectomy was found to be effective in refractory FM .
