Abstract
Aim-To study the unique aspects of pediatric orbital floor fracture(POFF) and to determine the relationship between outcomes and management strategy (conservative vs surgical).
Method-Records of 34children presenting with POFF were reviewed retrospectively including clinical features, management and outcomes.
Results-Of 34children, 23(67.64%) were managed conservatively and 11(32.35%) underwent surgical exploration via extraperiosteal approach. 8cases had trapdoor fracture of which 5were white eyed blow out fracture(WEBOF) requiring immediate surgery. Of 23children managed conservatively, 21(91.30%) recovered motility restriction, 2had persistent diplopia in downgaze, though it was inconsequential.
Conclusion-POFF behaves differently in view of distinct healing response with most cases showing a gratifying response to conservative management. Muscle entrapment and oculocardiac reflex warrants urgent surgery. In our study, incidence of WEBOF was more than previous studies.
