Abstract
Aim :To assess prevalence of Diabetic retinopathy (DR) in general population by 5 major modalities of screening
Methods:1.DR Screening Camps: exclusively focused on detecting DM and DR, creating awareness(Detected DM-44.19%,DR-9.57%).
2. Tele-ophthalmology:included 11 primary vision centres with skilled ophthalmic technician & non-mydriatic fundus camera for teleconsultation and referral(DM-2.98% DR-14.34%)
3.Tie up with diabetologists:Giving comprehensive eye care to patients and prompt referral(DM-100%, DR-61.47%)
4. Diabetes Day Camp: Yearly Awareness screening camps (DM-25.33%, DR-11.6%)
5.Community Outreach Cataract Camp: adjuvant to Cataract Camp (DM-1.09% DR-5.99%).
Results:A tertiary eye centre, in 1year with above strategies screened 1,87,726 patients of which 9524(5.24%) had DM and 1509(15.8%) had DR. Early detection and treatment of DR is the prime objective. A multiprong systematic approach is required to cover the community to reduce avoidable & vision-threatening DR
