Abstract
We report a case of Central Retinal Vein Occlusion (CRVO) with macular edema (ME) & visual impairment that occurred in a 32-year-old healthy female following intense exercise & dehydration. She presented with painless loss of vision (V/A 6/12) in her left eye(LE) following several days of intense physical activity (running & exercise) during the COVID lockdown period. No previous systemic/ocular medical history. Normal Anterior segment. Dilated fundus examination of LE showed CRVO with differential involvement of the superior retina and ME. OCT revealed a CMT of 598um. Extensive blood work up & referral to rheumatologist revealed no underlying disorders. LE vision improved following intravitreal injection: 0.5mg/0.05ml Ranibizumab. CRVO can occur in young due to intensive exercise in the absence of any other co-morbidity. Precipitating factor is likely a combination of transiently increased vascular pressure in the retinal microcirculation, dehydration and hemorheologic abnormalities.
