Abstract
Aim: To describe the clinical picture and visual outcome in Retrobulbar neuritis patients
Method:Retrospective analysis of 60 eyes with neuroimaging positive RBN
Results: RBN was mainly seen in females between 30-40 years. Most common etiology was idiopathic followed by MRI evident demyelinating disorders. BCVA at time of presentation was between 0 to 0.6(LogMAR) in 21%, 0.7-1.9 in 38%, 2-5 in 31%. Fundus was normal in 73%, hyperemic in 20% and had disc pallor in 6%. All patients received IV Methylprednisolone 1gm for 3 days followed by oral steroids. BCVA improved to <0.6 LogMAR in 58% at 3 days and 85% at 1 month. However, disc pallor set in 55% at 1 month. Statistically significant association was found between age and 1 month fundus evaluation and time of presentation to 1 month visual acuity (p<0.05). Conclusion: RBN is an underdiagnosed and neurologically crucial entity. Early presentation & prompt treatment usually leads to good visual recovery + timely systemic diagnosis.
