Abstract

Aim: To study the effect of primary probing in children with congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction in children older than 2 yrs

Methods and material : a prospective interventional case study including 32 eyes of 27 children with CNLDO,aged more than 2 years .diagnosis of CNLDO made upon history of watering since birth. Children with previous probing were excluded. All children underwent probing of Nasolacrimal duct .success of probing defined as complete resolution of symptoms .repeat probing done after 6 to 8 weeks if needed.

Results: total 27 children (32 eyes) aged between 2 to 4 yrs, with history of watering, discharge since birth were included in study. Overall success rate was 81%. 5 (18.51%) children needed second procedure, two of them were bilateral. persistence of watering was seen in 3 children.

Conclusion: probing is still viable surgical option in children older than 2 yrs. Trial of Primary probing should be given before going for complex procedures.
