Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate the role of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) with or without Internal Limiting Membrane (ILM) peeling on post operative central macular thickness (CMT) and visual acuity(VA) in patients with diabetic retinopathy.
Materials & methods: It was a retrospective study. Patients were divided into two groups A and B. Group A (15 patients) underwent PPV with ILM peeling and Group B (17 patients) underwent PPV without ILM peeling. CMT was evaluated postoperatively using SD-OCT.
Results: No significant difference was noted in post operative VA in both the groups. Mean CMT was noted to be 197 μm in group A and 278 μm in group B. The difference was statistically significant. Epiretinal membranes were more common in group B(52.9%) than group A(6.6%).
Conclusion: Visual outcome in patients undergoing PPV with or without ILM peeling for PDR complications was noted to be similar. However post operative macular edema and epiretinal membranes were less likely with ILM peeling.
