Abstract
Aim:To study the ocular manifestations in sickle cell disease. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at the Sickle Cell Institute, VIMSAR for 4months i.e.November 2019-February 2020. All the patients having history of sickle cell disease for > 10 years constituted the study population. Descriptive data were analyzed as proportions, mean, median and mode.Results: Out of 51 study participants, 22 cases were below 19 years of age(43.1%). Female predominance was seen (50.98%). Positive proliferative sickle cell retinopathy, male (71.8%) suffered more from ocular manifestations. The ocular manifestations of the participants were major retinal vessel changes in 4(57.14%),neovascularization in 2(28.57%)and peripheral vessel deposits in1(14.3%).Conclusion:Significant visual loss due to proliferating vascular changes can be prevented insickle cell patients by early ocular diagnosis.
