Abstract
AIM:
To analyze ocular signs in Diabetic Nephropathy & co-relationship with Diabetic Retinopathy.
METHODOLOGY:
In observational prospective study, randomly selected 400 CKD cases (800 eyes) examined for ocular manifestations due to nephropathy. The correlation of severity of nephropathy & retinopathy analysed using Pearson’s coefficient.
RESULTS:
•Majority cases had End-Stage Renal Disease (44%)
•54% cases had no prior ophthalmic evaluation signifying lack of awareness
•~98% had ocular signs associated with CKD
•Both NPDR & PDR common in ESRD/Stage5 CKD
•Higher grades retinopathies strongly positively correlated with more advanced nephropathy
CONCLUSION:
•Most nephropathy detected in advanced stages, only when symptomatic
•In India, significant no. of diabetics (70millions) develop diabetic nephropathy
•Ocular examination warranted at regular intervals to prevent blindness in DN cases
•Unlike for cases with DM/HTN, there are no clinical guidelines for routine eye screening in CKD.
