Abstract
The authors evaluated a novel use of donor sclera as encircling band in patients with primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment undergoing combined encirclage with trans para plana vitrectomy for varied indications. The donor sclera was fashioned into 3 mm wide long strips and was anchored to the host sclera by passing through partial thickness scleral tunnels or with fibrin glue . Edges of the strips were secured with watzke sleeve/4-0 ethibond suture. Following trans para plana vitrectomy, air fluid exchange and endolaser, the indentation was adjusted prior to silicon oil injection. Adequate indentation was obtained in all cases . No cases of infection of donor strip or extrusion was seen. This technique is cost effective and ensures more efficient utilisation of donor tissue. It also obviates the need and complications of creation of partial thickness scleral flaps in eyes with thin sclera by allowing fibrin glue assisted placement of an encircling band is such eyes.
