Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To compare SLT with antiglaucoma medication(AGM) in glaucoma treatment in randomized clinical trial
METHOD
It is prospective study of 65 eyes of primary OAG, pseudoexfoliative glaucoma and Ocular Hypertension attending tertiary centre. Diagnosis was done by measuring IOP, fundus evaluation, perimetry. Eyes were randomized into first arm on AGM; second arm undergoing SLT and were studied over 1 year, extra drugs were added to either of groups and SLT added in SLT arm if target IOP not achieved
RESULT
Of 65 eyes, 54 were analysed reaching 1 year.26 were in AGM and 28 in SLT.Mean baseline IOP (mmhg) was 27.1(AGM) and 26(SLT). At 1year, mean IOP decline was 11.65 in AGM, 8.14 in SLT. In AGM, 46.15% needed additional drugs while in SLT 35% needed extra SLT/drugs to attain target IOP
CONCLUSION
Although both methods were effective in IOP control, AGM was better in significantly lowering IOP (p≤0.05) Hence SLT can be used as cost effective adjuvant to AGM thus reducing polypharmacy
