Abstract
Purpose:To examine the thickness of Retina and Choroid in CKD patients using SD-OCT.Material and methods:CKD patients of age group 50-75 years and their age matched controls were evaluated between June 2019 to March 2020.Detailed history, ophthalmologic and systemic examination was done.Retinal and Choroidal thickness were measured using SD-OCT.Results:105 eyes of 65 CKD patients and 40 controls were evaluated.Retinal thickness (p<0.05) and Choroidal thickness (p<0.01) were reduced in CKD patients compared to their age matched controls. The thinning was more evident in advanced CKD (stages 4&5).Also,thinner choroid was associated with a lower glomerular filtration rate (p<0.01),heavier proteinuria(p<0.01) and an increased plasma level of C-reactive protein. Conclusion:CKD is associated with a decrease in retinal and choroidal thickness which may represent systemic microvascular injury. Thus highlighting the need for eye as well as Cardiovascular system evaluations in patients with CKD
