OBJECTIVE–To study intraoperative and postoperative complications and visual outcome of small incision cataract surgery (SICS) in pseudoexfoliation syndrome (PXF). MATERIALS AND METHODS–In a prospective interventional study conducted over 2 years, 60 patients with cataract with PXF underwent SICS at our institute by single surgeon. RESULT–Among 60 patients, intraoperatively we observed poor pupillary dilatation(70%), phacodonesis(7%), zonular dialysis(10%), posterior capsular rent(13%), IOL placement in sulcus(10%), capsular tension ring placement(7%), aphakia(7%). 33% had corneal oedema on postoperative day 1 resolving within 1- 2 weeks. 60% had visual acuity of 6/18-6/6, 23% had 6/60-6/24 and 17% had < 6/60 after 2 months postoperatively. CONCLUSION–SICS in patients with PXF is associated with vision threatening complications which can be reduced by thorough preoperative evaluation, and with appropriate intraoperative measures, good visual outcome can be achieved.
